Beachgoers in early-20th-century dress sit and stroll on the steep, grass-topped dunes of Plum Island, with the broad beach and sea stretching away at left under a pale sky. Plum Island is the long barrier island at the mouth of the Merrimack River, divided among Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich. By the early 1900s it was a summer resort for Newburyport and nearby towns, and its dunes and the Parker River estuary later became part of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.
