About this postcard

A tall red-brick lighthouse with an open iron gallery rises behind dense green trees and shrubs on the left. To the right, a frame keeper's dwelling with a hipped roof and chimney stands on wooden pilings above a sandy beach, with calm water and a low horizon beyond. The lighthouse at Lighthouse Point has marked the eastern end of Sanibel since the 1880s, and the island's east-west orientation and shallow Gulf shelf made it a well-known shelling destination. By the late 1970s, Sanibel and nearby Naples were established family beach destinations. The sender's note places the visit in that vacation setting, with shelling on Sanibel, beach days in Naples, and a hospital visit for an ear infection on Easter.
