About this postcard
The photograph shows the twin-towered white facade of Mission Santa Barbara, with red tile roofs, the arched convento arcade, and a stone fountain in the forecourt. A brown-robed Franciscan friar walks across the plaza. Founded in 1786 by Father Fermín Lasuén, the mission is the tenth of the California chain and the only one still occupied by Franciscan friars, which earned it the name Queen of the Missions. The view predates the June 1925 earthquake that damaged the church and brought down the towers; the facade shown is the pre-earthquake building, rebuilt and rededicated by 1927.
