A lakeside promenade in Westlake Park, with visitors seated on green benches or strolling past beds of orange and red flowers, while a red canoe carrying several people glides on the water. Westlake Park, laid out in the 1880s west of downtown Los Angeles, was renamed MacArthur Park in 1942 in honor of General Douglas MacArthur; its artificial lake and flower-lined walks made it a popular leisure spot pictured on many Southern California postcards.
