About this postcard
A paved road curves through a dense stand of tall red pines, their bare trunks rising to a high green canopy, in Itasca State Park, Minnesota. The caption calls the stand "Virgin Pine," referring to the old-growth white and red pines preserved in the park. Itasca State Park, established in 1891, is Minnesota's oldest state park and contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River; its surviving virgin pine stands are among the few remnants of the great north woods timber that was logged across the region in the late 19th century.
