About this postcard

A northern Wisconsin lake viewed from a grassy shore through a frame of tall trees, a small rowboat pulled up at the water's edge and a low, wooded far bank across the water. The caption gives the scene only as a scenic lake near Rhinelander, the Oneida County city that served as a gateway to the North Woods, a region built on logging, paper mills, and summer resort trade. Rhinelander's lumber-era wealth and its chain of surrounding lakes drew vacationers north by rail through the early twentieth century, and the town's invented Hodag became a local mascot for that tourist trade.
