About this postcard
The photograph shows Schloss Namedy, a large castle with towers and turrets set in landscaped grounds, a curving path, and trees. The penciled notes describe it facing east on the Rhine, with the court and front door on the west side, and date its construction to 1701-1706. The writer calls the castle modern in every respect. A room key marks the dining salon, ballroom, office and sitting room, bedroom, and the offices of the 5th Brigade headquarters. The writer notes that the rooms beyond the stairway were occupied by Prince Hohenzollern, a Reichsrätin, a princess, and two daughters, while "All this side is ours"; the dining salon was on the writer's side, and the writer's cook shared the kitchen with the household chef. The mix of domestic rooms and military offices reflects the American occupation of the Rhineland after World War I, when headquarters were established in German buildings.
