About this postcard
A black-and-white view of the guest house and main building at Scotty's Castle, with the clock tower and watch tower rising beyond the front of the Hacienda. Tiled roofs and an arched arcade give the compound a Spanish colonial look, and Joshua trees and other desert vegetation grow among the buildings, with mountains behind. The castle was the winter home of Chicago insurance executive Albert Johnson, built in Grapevine Canyon and named for the prospector and storyteller Walter Scott, known as Death Valley Scotty. By the time of this photograph it stood inside Death Valley National Monument, established in 1933, and the Hacienda, Rancho, and castle offered accommodations to visitors.
