The view looks through an arched doorway into the living room of Scotty's Castle, where a beamed ceiling, hanging lanterns, a grand piano, tiled fireplace, patterned rug, and period furnishings fill the space. Despite the name, the house is a Spanish Colonial Revival mansion, built in the 1920s as the desert retreat of Albert and Bessie Johnson. Its popular name came from Walter Scott, the prospector and storyteller whose tales drew Johnson to Death Valley.
