The photograph looks up a broad flight of stone steps toward the carved stone screen between the nave and choir of Canterbury Cathedral. Gothic arcading and vaulting rise around the screen, with a tall column at right.
Carved figures of six kings stand on the screen; they are identified as Henry V, Richard II, Ethelbert, Edward the Confessor, Henry IV, and Henry VI. Canterbury was one of medieval England's great pilgrimage churches, and the screen marked the boundary between the public nave and the choir.
