A flock of gulls wheels over the surf and dark offshore rocks at Avalon, the principal town on Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast. The card is captioned simply "Sea Gulls, Avalon, Catalina Island, California," presenting the island's seabirds and rocky shoreline rather than the resort town itself. Avalon grew as a tourist destination after the Banning brothers and later William Wrigley Jr. developed steamer service and attractions on the island in the early twentieth century.
White border; printed card number "J-26" at upper right; faint surface scuff/line near top center.
No postmark. Undivided back with printed "POST CARD / ADDRESS" heading and stamp box; Pacific Novelty Co. imprint (San Francisco & Los Angeles); white border, color halftone print; light foxing and soiling on card stock.
