About this postcard

The Seagull Monument stands on a circular paved plaza in Temple Square, a granite column crowned with bronze gulls, with a large evergreen and the spires of the Salt Lake Temple behind it. Dedicated in 1913, the monument was designed and carved by Mahonri M. Young, who also supervised its erection; the caption identifies him as a grandson of Brigham Young. It commemorates the 1848 episode in which seagulls reportedly saved the Mormon pioneers' crops from hordes of crickets, an event the caption calls "a miracle as real as any found in Holy Writ." Temple Square is a historic center of the Latter-day Saint faith in downtown Salt Lake City.
