About this postcard

The Seagull Monument stands on a paved plaza in Temple Square, a tall granite column topped by two gilded seagulls. A large evergreen and a spired, Gothic-style building of the square rise behind it. The monument commemorates the 1848 "Miracle of the Gulls," when California gulls were said to have saved the Mormon pioneers' first crops by eating a plague of crickets. Mahonri M. Young, a noted sculptor and grandson of Brigham Young, designed and carved the work, which was dedicated in 1913. The caption calls the deliverance "a miracle as real as any found in Holy Writ."
