About this postcard
A tall granite column crowned by two gilded seagulls stands on a paved plaza in Temple Square, with a large evergreen and a spired, Gothic-style building of the square behind it. The Seagull Monument, sculpted by Mahonri Young and dedicated in 1913, commemorates the "Miracle of the Gulls" of 1848, when flocks of California gulls are said to have saved the Mormon pioneers' first crops by devouring a plague of crickets. It remains one of the best-known landmarks of the Latter-day Saint historic site in downtown Salt Lake City.
