About this postcard
A silver inkstand with two inkwells and a bell-shaped central body rests on a tray in a display case, with a handwritten label behind it. The caption identifies it as the inkstand used at the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. It was originally used by the State Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania, made in 1753 at a cost of £25 16s. The piece predates the Revolution and ties to Pennsylvania's colonial government. Its association with both the Declaration and the Constitution made it a patriotic relic, the kind of object reproduced for national audiences in the early 1900s.
