Silver Lake and Mount Chocorua, Madison, NH, 1906

About this postcard

The view crosses Silver Lake toward Mount Chocorua, with a dark band of pine along the near shore and the bare peak rising beyond. The lake lies in the town of Madison, New Hampshire, at the southern edge of the White Mountains, and the printed caption names the lake, the town, and the mountain together. Chocorua's granite summit was among the most painted peaks in the White Mountains, a favorite of nineteenth-century landscape artists and a standard sight for summer visitors who came north by rail. By the early 1900s the region was a well-established resort area, and views like this one were the usual way travelers sent the scenery home.
