About this postcard
The Singer Building rises above the dense roofs of lower Manhattan, its slender tower topped by a green dome and ornate cornice. Around it are lower commercial blocks, a white tower flying a flag, and beyond them a body of water and distant shoreline under a blue sky streaked with pink clouds. Completed in 1908 at Broadway and Liberty Streets, the 47-story Singer Building was briefly the tallest building in the world. The caption notes its 612-foot height, 5,000 tenants, 16 Otis traction elevators, and foundations carried on caissons to bedrock 92 feet below. It was built by the Singer Manufacturing Co. and stood until its demolition in the late 1960s.
