Skiers at St. Mary's Glacier, Colorado, circa 1940

About this postcard

A party of skiers, some carrying packs and poles, stands on a snowfield below a small blue lake set in a steep, forested cirque; alpine flowers color the meadow in the foreground and a snowbank streaks the slope at right. The card names the spot as St. Mary's Glacier, a permanent snowfield and small lake in the Front Range west of Denver, near Idaho Springs, that became a popular year-round recreation spot in the mid-twentieth century. The scene shows the area as a ski and outing destination rather than the mining landscape of its earlier years.
