About this postcard
A rider in a red chairlift rises above a forested mountain valley, with Gatlinburg and its small grid of streets below and the blue ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains beyond. The lift climbs Crockett Mountain; the caption calls it the only one of its kind in the South and notes that Northerners would know it as a ski lift. Mt. LeConte, one of the Smokies' best-known peaks, fills the distant view. The sender wrote that they were only watching the lift and did not have the nerve to try it, on a warm day when the mountains looked like a rainbow of colors. Gatlinburg was then a busy gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the chairlift gave tourists a high panorama of the town and surrounding ridges.
