Sky Line Drive cuts along a sheer cliff face, with two tunnels bored through the rock and an early automobile on the road. Below, the Arkansas River valley carries the tracks of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad toward the Royal Gorge. The drive was promoted as a route to the gorge, a deep canyon southwest of Cañon City that was already a celebrated Colorado scenic attraction. The Denver and Rio Grande line through the canyon was part of that appeal, following the river on a ledge beneath the cliffs.
