Sky View Looking South on Midway, Chicago World's Fair, 1933

About this postcard

A high vantage looks south along the Midway, the Century of Progress amusement strip, where a large circular pavilion, a roller coaster, and dense crowds line the thoroughfare. The 1933–34 fair ran along Chicago's lakefront south of downtown, and its Midway collected rides, sideshows, and concession buildings in the modernistic style of the moment. The card's own text sells the strip hard, promising "bizarre and startling entertainment features," historic pageants, military maneuvers, and sporting events, all pitched to outdo anything done before. Such spectacle was welcome in Depression-era Chicago, and the fair drew millions of visitors across its two seasons.
