Pale, needle-like formations stand out against a dark background in this close view inside Skyline Caverns, just outside Front Royal in the Shenandoah Valley. The delicate sprays are anthodites, sometimes called cave flowers, a rare crystalline growth that made the caverns a tourist draw.
The cave opened to visitors in 1939, and the descriptive text on the back also names Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, then the state's land-grant engineering college.
White border; black-and-white halftone print; minor edge wear.
No postmark, stamp, or handwriting anywhere on this side — the entire back is printed descriptive text (green ink) about the anthodites of Skyline Caverns. Cream/matte stock with light toning and a few soft corner creases; front carries a white border, a coarse halftone photo, and a printed caption below the image. No government postal imprint, so no card_type assigned.
