Skyline Drive and Mary's Rock, Panorama, VA, circa 1935

About this postcard

A high vantage looks down on a winding white road looping through open pasture at the foot of a densely wooded mountain, with a few small buildings and a red-roofed structure at the lower right. The road is Skyline Drive, and the peak is Mary's Rock, near Panorama in Page County, Virginia. Skyline Drive follows the crest of the Blue Ridge through Shenandoah National Park. Construction began in the early 1930s, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews worked on the road and park improvements before the drive was completed later in the decade. Mary's Rock is one of the park's better-known peaks, and the scene shows the mix of pasture and forest at the mountain's base.
