About this postcard
A view across a broad meadow of scattered conifers toward the dark blue water of Yellowstone Lake, with the long forested ridge known as the Sleeping Giant rising beyond the far shore and hazy peaks in the distance. The "Sleeping Giant" is a well-known silhouette on the lake's west shore, so named because the skyline resembles a reclining figure; the lake itself is the largest high-elevation body of water in North America and lies at the heart of Yellowstone National Park. The photograph is the work of the Haynes studio, the official concession photographers of the park from the 1880s onward.
