Small sailboat heeling in a stiff breeze, 1909

About this postcard

A small, dark-hulled sailboat with a single tall battened sail heels sharply to leeward in a strong breeze. One or two figures crouch on the raised side while spray breaks at the bow. A low tree line and a small boathouse or shed mark the far shore under a pale, cloud-streaked sky. The printed caption, "A fine Sailing Breeze," treats the scene as a generic celebration of small-boat sailing rather than a named location, a common approach on early twentieth-century view cards. The card was sent to Redondo Beach, then a growing seaside resort near Los Angeles.
