About this postcard
The view looks down the aisle of the smoking car on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Pennsylvania Special, past tufted green leather seats and settees toward a uniformed attendant at the far end. Paneled wood columns, arched painted ceiling panels, and brass electroliers with frosted glass shades fill the car. The Pennsylvania Special was the road's extra-fare, all-Pullman flyer between New York and Chicago. It entered service in 1902 and was renamed the Broadway Limited in 1912. Smoking cars gave first-class passengers a place to gather, read, and talk while smoking, apart from their berths or seats.
