About this postcard

A painted diorama shows Snow White on a rocky ledge above a wooden walkway, where the seven dwarfs in pointed caps and colorful tunics file along a railing. White birds, rabbits, and geese fill the garden setting around them. The scene is part of Fairyland Caverns at Rock City Gardens on Lookout Mountain, a walk-through attraction filled with storybook tableaux. Rock City grew from Garnet and Frieda Carter's garden and became known for its rock formations, mountain views, and cavern displays. A printed heading sends motorists up Highway 58 from Chattanooga, a reminder of how much the attraction depended on auto tourists; its "See Rock City" signs were painted on barn roofs across the South. By the late 1940s, Snow White was a familiar figure to family audiences, and the caverns presented her among other nursery-rhyme and fairy-tale scenes.
