The Social Studio at Bristol Ferry, Rhode Island, is a shingled, gabled building with a tall central chimney, standing alone in an open field. Bristol Ferry was the ferry landing at the north end of Aquidneck Island in Portsmouth and a summer art colony in the early 1900s. A visitor wrote that the studio was built by "the richest maiden lady in R.I." and was full of paintings, with lessons in wood carving, painting, drawing, raffia work, and wood turning. The range of classes reflects the period's interest in handicrafts and summer art study.
