About this postcard
The Soldiers' and Sailors Monument stands at the center of Indianapolis, a tall limestone shaft crowned by the gilded figure of Victory, with sculptural groups around its base and a fountain and steps in the foreground. Office buildings of Monument Circle fill the background. Completed in 1901 to a design by Bruno Schmitz, the 284-foot memorial honors Indiana's Civil War soldiers and sailors and remained the city's civic anchor in the 1940s. Lloyd's note ties the card to an ordinary 1946 visit, mentioning an early-morning arrival, an exam the next day, and a planned trip to the lakes; he also asks whether "pop" ever went to the Fox theater. The printed caption reads "Solders' and Sailors Monument," likely a typo for Soldiers'.
