About this postcard

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument rises over Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, with a fountain in the foreground and commercial buildings ringing the plaza. Completed in 1901 from Bruno Schmitz's design, the 284-foot limestone monument honors Indiana's Civil War soldiers and sailors and is topped by a figure of Victory. The Circle has long been the city's civic heart. The printed caption spells the first word "Solders," likely a slip for Soldiers'. A traveler's note on the back catches an arrival in the city, with an exam the next day and plans for a Fox theater event and the lakes.
