About this postcard
The Soldiers' and Sailors Monument rises from the center of Indianapolis, its tall limestone shaft topped by the gilded bronze figure of Victory, with sculptural groups clustered around the base and a fountain and steps in the foreground; office buildings of the surrounding circle fill the background. Completed in 1901 to designs by German architect Bruno Schmitz, the 284-foot monument honors Indiana's soldiers and sailors of the Civil War and remains the focal point of Monument Circle. The card's linen-era coloring shows the monument as it appeared in the early automobile age.
