About this postcard
A group of soldiers in khaki uniforms and wide-brimmed campaign hats pose on a grassy field, the front row seated with guitars and a mandolin while the rest stand behind them. The card's own caption calls the scene "Music in the Air at Camp Mills, Mineola, Long Island, N.Y." Camp Mills was a large World War I cantonment established in 1917 on Long Island, used by the 42nd "Rainbow" Division and later as a demobilization and National Guard camp; informal singing and string-band music were common pastimes for troops in training.
