The Soldiers' Monument rises from the green at Waltham Common, a tall stone shaft hung with flags and bunting. A large American flag flies from a pole at the center of the lawn, with mature shade trees and a street of buildings behind. Waltham was an industrial city west of Boston, known for watchmaking and textiles, and its common served as the civic gathering place for memorials, parades, and public ceremonies. The message is a family note about a Saturday visit and a horse sale.
