The Soldiers' National Monument stands behind a low iron fence in Gettysburg National Cemetery, a tall shaft topped by a statue with seated figures grouped around its base. Dark trees close in behind the monument. The cemetery was created for Union dead after the July 1863 battle, and the monument was dedicated there in 1869. By the time this card was mailed, Gettysburg had long been a destination for veterans, families, and tourists, and the sender's note records a battlefield visit.
