About this postcard
The photograph looks up a curving staircase with a Chinese Chippendale-style railing inside Sotterley, the plantation house in St. Mary's County, Maryland. A tall case clock stands on the landing, and an ornate Chinese lantern hangs overhead. In the foreground are a dark wood chair, a small table with flowers, and a patterned rug. The caption identifies Sotterley as the home of Governor Plater; George Plater served as Maryland's governor in the early 1790s.
