About this postcard

Looking down South Elm Street, the view shows a wide unpaved commercial street with trolley tracks curving through the foreground. Horse-drawn wagons and buggies stand at the curbs, and multi-story brick business blocks line the street beneath a line of telegraph and trolley poles. Signs for a drug store and other shops appear along the right-hand block. Greensboro, the seat of Guilford County, was growing as a textile and insurance center in the early 1900s, and South Elm Street served as its main retail thoroughfare. The mix of trolley tracks and horse-drawn traffic reflects a commercial street in transition.
