About this postcard

The view looks south down South Howard Street in Akron, Ohio. A trolley car runs on tracks in the roadway while horse-drawn wagons and delivery carts line the curbs. Pedestrians in coats and hats walk the sidewalks. Three- and four-story brick commercial blocks with awnings and shop signs stand on both sides, including a corner store advertising 'GREENWOOD' and a dental parlor. A tall smokestack and a large factory block rise in the distance, and trolley wires and utility poles cross the sky. Akron was a fast-growing industrial city in the early 1900s, and South Howard Street was one of its downtown business streets. The smokestack and factory block in the distance point to the industry that fed the city's growth, while the street itself shows the everyday mix of trolley, wagon, and foot traffic in a commercial district before automobiles dominated downtown.
