A trolley car runs along a broad, tree-lined stretch of South Pleasant Street beside the open green of the town common in Amherst, Massachusetts. Utility poles and overhead wires follow the track. Amherst is the seat of Amherst College, and its shaded streets and commons kept the town's nineteenth-century New England character into the trolley era, when street railways connected it with neighboring Northampton and other Connecticut Valley towns.
