About this postcard

Live oaks draped with Spanish moss shade a dark pool at Middleton Gardens. Beneath the moss-covered limb of a huge live oak, the water reflects camellias and azaleas during the bloom season. A lawn with azaleas and a small white-columned garden house are also reflected in the pond. Middleton Place, begun in the 1740s by Henry Middleton on the Ashley River, is a National Historic Landmark known for its formal gardens, which survived the Civil War. The hanging moss and spring blooms are hallmarks of the South Carolina lowcountry landscape.
