A view across the water toward Spirit Island, a small wooded islet on Lake Minnetonka, with a rocky shoreline and lawn in the right foreground and a distant tree-lined island on the horizon. Lake Minnetonka, west of Minneapolis, was one of the Twin Cities' premier summer resort lakes in the early 20th century, ringed by hotels, pavilions and steamboat landings. Spirit Island was among the lake's best-known landmarks and a frequent subject for postcard photographers and publishers.
