A low, cone-shaped sinter formation sends up a plume of spray and steam, with a small pool of water at its base and a dark pine-covered ridge across the open geyser basin behind. Sponge Geyser is a small, frequently splashing geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, near Old Faithful, named for the spongy texture of its surrounding silica deposits. The park, established in 1872 as the world's first national park, is famed for its concentration of geysers and hot springs.
Linen-textured stock with a white border; number 4513 printed at upper left.
No postmark, stamp, or handwriting; unused divided-back linen card. Printed caption on back describes the geyser; light soiling and faint foxing on cream stock.
