About this postcard
The view shows Paradise Inn under deep snow, its steep red roof and dormers rising above the snowfield, with snow-covered slopes and evergreen forest behind. Two small figures stand in the foreground, with snowdrifts stretching around them. The scene is the inn's spring opening, when the building was still surrounded by winter snow. Paradise Inn opened in 1917 and was built in the rustic style associated with early national park architecture. Its setting on the south slope of Mount Rainier is one of the snowiest places in the contiguous United States, so the inn's seasonal opening often came while snow still covered the ground.
