About this postcard
A four-story red brick hospital with a dark mansard-roofed central tower, arched windows, and a two-level wooden veranda stands at a street corner, with smaller frame buildings alongside. The printed caption names it St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, North Dakota. Benedictine sisters founded St. Alexius in 1885, and it is generally credited as the first hospital in what became North Dakota. The sender posted the card from Bismarck on December 23, 1906, two days before Christmas, writing that he had come to Bismarck "but not to this" place, and closed with a Christmas greeting to a woman addressed in Chicago. Holiday mail moved in volume in that era, and a picture postcard sent the day before Christmas Eve was a quick way to reach someone before the holiday.
