About this postcard

St. Charles' School stands at a street corner in Waltham, Massachusetts, a three-story red brick building with white stone trim, tall multi-pane windows, and arched entrances. A single small figure near the corner gives scale to the broad facade, and the view opens across a paved street under a pale, clouded sky. The school served Waltham's Catholic community in the early 20th century, when the city's mills and watch works drew families into dense neighborhoods west of Boston. Brick parish schools of this kind combined classroom space with a strong institutional presence on the street.
