About this postcard
A view down St. Charles Street in New Orleans, with a yellow electric streetcar running on tracks between rows of commercial buildings. Ornate cast-iron galleries and balconies, characteristic of the city's 19th-century architecture, line the covered sidewalks, and pedestrians in period dress walk beneath them. A large brick hotel block, identified in the caption as the St. Charles Hotel, rises at the end of the vista. The St. Charles was one of the city's grand hotels and was rebuilt several times after fires. By the early 1900s, electric streetcars were the ordinary way to travel along the avenue.
