About this postcard

The card shows a long wall of arched burial niches at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, one of New Orleans's oldest cemeteries. Vases of flowers, potted plants, and wreaths fill many of the openings, with a grassy lawn and paved walkway below and trees behind. The printed caption dates the cemetery to 1788 and notes the graves of early French and Spanish settlers. It also names the pirate Dominick You, likely Dominique You, as buried here. Above-ground wall vaults and tombs are common in New Orleans because the high water table made deep burial difficult.
