About this postcard

St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church, South, is a large classical brick and stone building with a columned portico, pediment, balustraded terrace, and a ribbed dome topped by a small lantern. The congregation's imposing edifice stood in a city that had grown quickly since the 1889 Land Run, and its classical scale matched the ambitions of a downtown church in the years before World War I. A sender called it "one of the show places of the town." The "South" in the name identifies the regional Methodist denomination that existed until the 1939 reunion.
