About this postcard

A red-brick church with a tall, dark-shingled steeple rises above a dense screen of trees, with a second slender spire visible in the distance at right. The printed caption names it as St. Mary's Church in Wien, Missouri, a small Chariton County community settled in the 1870s and 1880s largely by German Catholic immigrants, whose parish church was the center of local religious life. The tinted, halftone-textured rendering is typical of inexpensive color lithograph postcards of the pre-World War I era.
