About this postcard
The photograph shows St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Batesville, Arkansas: a Gothic Revival stone building with a square, crenellated tower at the left, a steep gabled roof, and a large pointed-arch window over the entrance. A small sign board stands on the lawn, with a street lamp at the right. Batesville sits on the White River in north-central Arkansas and ranks among the state's oldest towns, a river port and commercial center through the nineteenth century. The Gothic Revival forms seen here, pointed arches and a battlemented tower, were the usual choice for Episcopal churches of the period, giving even a modest parish a settled, old-country look.
