About this postcard

A broad wooden staircase rises from the hall of Independence Hall in Philadelphia to a landing, with a turned-baluster railing and an arched window with fanlight above. A large framed painting hangs on the left wall, and a figure stands in a doorway at the lower right. The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House, where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and adopted. Its upper floors housed the American Philosophical Society and other bodies before the building became a national shrine.
